January 18.  At 0350hrs, Jackson FD was alerted to a confirmed fire called in by a patrolling PD officer.  They quickly requested the box assignment bringing E1905 4th due with 5 men.  E1405 arrived on scene 3 minutes later to find fire showing for a 1 story house.  They stretched a line to the interior and started aggressively attacking the fire.  When E1905 arrived a few minutes later, the fire was knocked down and they were assigned to complete overhaul and check for extension in the attic area.  E1905 stayed on scene to assist with overhaul and get equipment back in service.  They were released after an hour's work.

January 18.  The 2nd working fire of the day was toned out at 0820hrs.  E1905 arrived on scene at 814 South Connecticut Ave 3 minutes later to find a 2 story, wood framed, single family dwelling with heavy fire showing from the 2nd floor.  They advanced a line inside to find that fire had already extended down the stairs and into the kitchen.  That fire was quickly extinguished and they made their push up the stairs to the 2nd floor.  They made it to the top of the stairs to find heavy fire and very high heat conditions.  They opened the line and discovered that, while they were taking the stairs, their line had burnt through in the kitchen.  While evacuating his crew, Lt Aaron Dupree sustained 1st & 2nd degree burns to his ear, neck and shoulder.  Command immediately called for 2 additional engines & the 2 1/2" back-up line that was stretched by E2304 was quickly placed in service from the outside to knock down the fire.  Crews re-entered the house to finish salvage and overhaul and the fire was placed under control at 0915hrs.  Lt Dupree was treated on scene, the residents were not injured and all units were in service by 1119hrs.

Wellston Residents Saved by Smoke Detector on Christmas Eve
December 24.  At 0331hrs, the 911 line rang for a reported structure fire at 370 Comet Road.  Box 191 was alerted and R/E1906 arrived on scene 3 minutes later to find heavy smoke pouring from the structure.  They stretched an attack line while E1905 laid the hydrant line in and started the search.  As R/E1906 was entering the structure, Command reported that all occupants were accounted for outside the structure.  L1406 went to the roof and completed vertical ventilation.  The primary was continued and turned out negative and the fire was knocked down within 10 minutes.  Crews remained on scene for another hour completing salvage and overhaul.  Thanks to a working smoke detector, there were no injuries.  The fire is believed to have started in the area of the Christmas tree.

Another Working Fire on Christmas Day
December 25.  At 1414hrs, almost 36 hours after the first fire was extinguished, the tones dropped for another possible structure fire at 370 Comet Road.  Capt Bill Denney arrived on scene within a minute and advised of a working fire.  By the time the engine arrived, fire was through the roof.  Due to the walls and ceiling being opened up from the earlier fire, and the vertical ventililation that had also been completed, the fire was well into the lightweight roof before our arrival.  An interior attack was attempted, but command evacuated all units a few minutes into the attack.  About 2 minutes later, the roof collapsed into the house.  All firefighters were accounted for and found to be okay and a deck gun and L1406's aerial were put into service to darken the fire down.  Crews then returned inside to mop up.  Units remained on scene until 1644hrs.

December 25.  WPD requested the Rescue Assignment for an overturned auto on West Broadway at 2111hrs this evening.  R/E1906 arrived on scene to find a car on its top with the driver's hand trapped between the bottom of the window sill and the pavement.  Lighting and stabilization was setup and when R1908 arrived on scene, the spreaders were put into service to lift the vehicle.  Once completed, the patient was removed via the back window and turned over to Medic 081.  The extrication took only 5 minutes to complete and the units were back in quarters by 2232hrs.

2006 Comes to an End, 35 Fires, 5 Extrications
December 31.  As 2006 ends, we look back over a safe and productive year.  There were no fire fatalities in our district and very few serious crashes.  We had another successful year in fire prevention and the department has strenghthened with the addition of working officers.  We had 35 fires this year, down from 2005 (our highest year to date).  We only had 5 extrications in 2006, down from 12 in 2005.  We had a handful of serious crashes that ended up not having entrapment (somehow).  We also had an increase in crashes involving ejections.  Overall, we responded to 558 calls for service, a huge increase in years past.  2004 was our old high at 484.  As we look toward 2007, we know there will be a lot of changes.  We merely hope for another safe and productive year!!!
3 Days in, Rollover with Entrapment on Mulga Rd
January 3.  At 2200 hrs, R/E1906, R1908 & M081 were alerted for a motor vehicle collision in the 800 block of Mulga Rd.  R/E1906 & M081 arrived on scene 4 minutes later to find 1 vehicle, on its side, with 1 occupant trapped.  R/E1906 started stabilization and assisted with patient care of the other occupant, who had self-extricated.  When R1908 arrived on scene, stabilization was completed and the roof was flapped to allow for removal of the patient.  She was then boarded and loaded into M081 for transport to HMC-Jackson.  The entire extrication took only 8 minutes and the crews were back in service within 45 minutes.

4th Due Fire on St Rt 93
January 22.  Jackson was alerted for a structure fire in the 19000 blk of State Route 93 at 2215hrs this evening.  A Liberty firefighter who was in the area quickly advised of a fully-involved house fire.  1421 Chief Doug Reed immediately requested the box assignment bringing E1905 4th due with 4 men.  E1405 arrived on scene 4 minutes later and found a 1 story house fully involved and advised of exterior operations.  E1401 laid a 1000' line down the lane from St Rt 93 and water supply was set-up on the highway.  E1905 arrived on scene and sent the crew on a long walk down the lane to the house.  The driver shuttled a few loads of water while the crew checked the back half of the house (which somehow was not affected by the large volume of fire) and helped with salvage and overhaul operations.  E5 returned to service just before 0100 hours, after loading a couple thousand feet of hose.

Another 4th Due Fire off of St Rt 93
January 25.  E1905 was toned out for another 4th due structure fire in the 200 block of Sand Hill Rd.  The call came in as a furnace explosion.  Coalton arrived on scene to find heavy fire showing from a 1 story, wood frame, single-family dwelling.  They initiated an interior attack while the remaining units established a water supply.  When E1905 arrived on scene, they were sent to the roof to ventilate around the top of the furnace and to check the attic space for extension.  The fire was marked under control within 20 minutes and E1905 returned to service in about an hour.  There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

February 7.  At 2115hrs, a medical assist was handled by SRU1910 on West Broadway.  While M081 was enroute to HMC-Jackson, with a Wellston firefighter driving, they found a working house fire at the intersection of South Pennsylvania Ave and 15th St.  At 2129hrs, Box 191 was alerted for the house fire at 1490 S Pennsylvania Ave.  A firefighter enroute to the station, along with a helpful citizen, alerted the unsuspecting residents to the fire and evacuated them prior to the Engine's arrival.  E1905 arrived on scene  to find a 2 story, wood framed, single family dwelling with fire showing from Side Bravo on the 1st and 2nd floors.  E1905 split crews and went to work.  The interior crew stretched a 1 3/4" preconnect to the 2nd floor while the exterior crew established a water supply and started ventilation.  E1906 arrived and pulled a back-up line to the exterior to extinguish the fire running up the outside near the chimney.  E1204 was sent inside to assist Wellston crews with pulling the ceiling and walls.  The fire was marked under control in 13 minutes.  The medic crew evaluated the residents.  There were no injuries.  As crews were overhauling, the 2nd fire of the night was toned out.
