February 6.  At 1107hrs, Rescue/Engine 1906 was alerted 4th due for a structure fire at 27 Jessie Street in Box 141 (Jackson).  E1405 arrived on scene of an occupied, split level house, with heavy smoke showing.  E1405 pulled a line while E1401 tagged the hydrant and pulled a back-up line.  L1406, the 1st arriving special service, completed a primary search with negative results.  R/E1906 was assigned 2nd arriving special service duties and headed to the roof for ventilation.  Once vertical ventilation was completed, the crew laddered the porch roof and ventilated and overhauled the attic (directly behind the stop sign).  The fire was under control in about 15 minutes, but units remained on scene for another 2 hours completing overhaul in the remodeled house.  Command special called several pieces to the scene for manpower during salvage and overhaul operations.  No injuries reported.  Wellston units were in service at 1341hrs.

R/E1906 Goes to Jackson for another House Fire
February 7.  Box 141 was filled at 0722hrs for another structure fire.  This time, units were off to the 300 block of Vine St for an occupied structure.  E1405 arrived on scene within 3 minutes and advised of a working attic fire.  All occupants were accounted for and Jackson crews started simultaneous fire attack, salvage and overhaul operations.  The fire was being knocked as we arrived.  We were assigned the RIT and just as FFs finished setting it up and completing our walk-around, Command called us inside to help with overhaul.  R/E1906's crew worked for about 30 minutes overhauling the attic area.  Another good knock by Jackson kept damage minimal to the structure.  Our crew was in service at 0838hrs.

Another Fully Involved House in the 1st Due
February 16.  Box 191 was alerted for a structure fire in the 300 block of North Illinois Avenue at 0149hrs.  When E1905 arrived on scene 4 minutes later, they were greeted by a wall of flames in front, exposures on both sides and 2 victims, 1 of which was severely burned.  E1905 pulled a blitz line and started knocking down the heavy fire on Side Alpha.  E1906 brought the hydrant in and pulled a 1.75" line for exposure protection.  M81 arrived on scene and immediately began treatment of both patients.  2 additional Medics were then requested, 1 for transport and 1 for standby at the scene.  E2304 pulled a 3rd handline and were able to make entry thru the Side Charlie due to most of the fire being knocked from the front.  E1204 pulled a 4th line for backup.  L1901 vented the roof in the rear and carried out several containers of flammable liquids.  1 patient was flown by MedFlight to Grant Medical Center with 3rd degree burns over 50% of his body.  The other patient was transported to HMC-Jackson by M91.  Crews remained on scene until 0434hrs completing extensive overhaul.  The cause of the fire is under investigation by Wellston FD, Wellston PD and the Ohio State Fire Marshall's Office.  Photos courtesy of HamdenFD.org.

February 11.  At 0131hrs, Engines 1905, 1906, 2304, 1201, 1405, Ladder 1901, Tanker 2302 and Medic 81 were alerted for a structure fire at 213 North Illinois Avenue.  The flames could be seen from the station.  E1905 arrived on scene minutes later and reported a 1 1/2 story, wood frame, single family dwelling with heavy fire showing from every window.  The initial report also advised of 2 exposures, Bravo & Delta.  Crews quickly pulled 2 handlines and started hitting the fire and protecting the exposures.  A good percentage of the fire was knocked down, but the first hydrant crews tagged was dead.  After transfering water from the other engines on scene, FFs tagged another hydrant.  It had very poor water pressure.  A call was made to the Water Treatment Plant to request the pumps be turned on.  After that was completed, crews had sufficient water to fight the fire.  The walls of the structure did collapse, but the fire was contained to the building of origin.  It was a total loss and Exposure B & D sustained a moderate amount of heat damage.  Crews didn't make it back in service until 0530hrs.  Even with the water problems, no injuries were reported during this incident.

L1901 crew venting the roof
February 18.  At 1623hrs, a Lt from Coalton FD reported a commercial structure fire with heavy smoke showing directly beside Jackson FD's station.  The box was filled bringing Engines 1405, 1401, 1204, & 1905, L1406, R/E1203 and M91 to the scene.  E1405 turned left off the ramp, drove about 20 feet, and pulled a 1.75" line thru the front door.  E1401 tagged the hydrant at the FD and layed a supply line.  L1406 pulled onto the ramp and took the A/B corner.  Command quickly notified E1204 to lay a line into the C Side and protect the fire station, which was about 1 foot to the left of the fire building.  A 2nd alarm was then sounded bringing Engines 1411, 1502, MJ-E1 & MJ-E6, L1901, MJ-R5, and Support vehicles from Liberty Twp and Madison-Jefferson.  E1905 arrived on Side C and was assigned overhaul.  They pulled ceiling and threw several salvage covers.  L1901 laddered the roof and cut 2 vent holes.  Crews were hampered by temperatures in the teens and some add-on type construction.  The fire was contained to the attic area with water damage to the main floor.  No injuries were reported.  Wellston crews returned to service at 1810hrs.

Brush Fires Keep Area Departments Busy
February 23.  Just before 1800hrs, Coalton was alerted for a brush fire on Springer Rd just of US 35.  They arrived on scene (with 1 Wellston FF on board) to find a large, wind driven brush fire.  They immediately requested Jefferson Twp (Ross Co.), Liberty Twp and Wellston to respond.  While Brush 1909 was enroute, Jackson was alerted on another brush fire off Pattonsville Rd.  1221 Chief John Frisby advised B1909 to standby at Station 12 until Jackson went on scene.  A few minutes later, Jackson units arrived on scene with a brush fire involving an outbuilding and dilapidated truck.  They requested Bloomfield Twp.  1221 released B1909 and went went enroute as well.  Crews were able to extinguish both fires relatively quickly, due largely in part to the great response from all area departments, and Wellston crews returned to service around 2015hrs.  Seeing as how Hamden & McArthur were both out on a large brush fire, an Engine crew was kept in station throughout the duration of the incident.  Area departments responded to 11 seperate brush fires for the day.

Another 1st Due Structure off Tower Ridge Rd
February 26.  At 1620hrs, Box 192 was filled for a structure fire in the area of 2788 Tower Ridge Rd.  Crews began the trip to the edge of the County and were able to see the column of smoke from over 3 miles away.  E1907 arrived on scene at 2053 Hickory Ridge Rd, just off Tower Ridge, and found at 1 1/2 story, single family dwelling, fully involved.  The Tower Ridge Command was established and exterior operations were started.  Crews placed 2 handlines and a deck gun in service.  Additional tankers were requested and a water shuttle operation was set-up from the water tower just off of SR 124.  Crews were on scene until 1851hrs.  The home was a total loss and the Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents.  1 firefighter received minor burns during this incident.  3 FFs were on station throughout the incident.  Enroute back to the station, E1907 stopped and extinguished a small refuse fire on SR 124.  Later, SRU1910 responded to the 1100 block of South Indiana Ave for an EMS assist on a cardiac arrest.  The crew assisted SEOEMS until they began transport.  The shift ended around 0515hrs, 2/27/06, with an assist to the resident on McGhee Ln.  Crews found a leaking fuel oil furnace.  It was quickly isolated and E1905 returned to service around 0545.
