Engine, Ladder on 1st Due Apartment Fire
April 22. E1905, L1901 &
M081 responded to a 1st due apartment fire at the Wells Manor Apartment
Complex on South Michigan Ave at 1742hrs this evening. They
arrived on scene to find light smoke showing from the 1st floor of
a 2 story, middle of the row apartment. They quickly confirmed
a kitchen fire that appeared to be out. As L1901 arrived on
scene, ventilation was started and crews checked for extension in
the apartment and in the Bravo exposure. An infant was checked
on scene for smoke inhalation. Crews were back in service around
1800hrs.

Rash of Arson Fires Continues
April 25. A string of arson fires has plagued the City
recently. E905 & E1906 responded to another car fire at
2256hrs this evening. There have been several dumpster fires,
car fires and small structure fires in the past few weeks. Investigators
are asking for help to find the person or persons responsible for
these fires. There is a reward available. Anyone with
information, please contact the Wellston Police Department (740-384-2171)
or the Wellston Fire Department (740-384-2128)

E1905 on House Fire with Coalton
April 27. E1905 was alerted at 0440hrs this morning
for a structure fire in the 500 Block of Hardscrapple Rd. E1905,
with 6, was 4th due. The crews were getting a knock on the fire
on our arrival. E1905 helped with salvage and overhaul.
Fire damage was contained to the Bravo side and the attic. But,
as you can see from the fan on the left, heat and smoke damage was
throughout. The 2 family members present were woke by smoke
detectors and were able to escape out a window. Wellston units
were in service at 0621hrs.

Career Day at WHS
April 27.
Shortly after the Engine was back in service from the house fire,
FF Roman Brandau & FF Ben Matthews traveled to the Wellston High
School for the 2006 Career Day. The entire Junior class of WHS
made its way through various demonstrations and speakers in the gymnasium.
Some students were then taken outside to see R1908. Only one
lucky student from each group was able to "bunker out."
The students asked a lot of questions and we may haved snagged a few
new recruits for the Cadet Corp too. Thanks to the Wellston
High School for letting us participate and thanks to FF Brandau &
FF Matthews for donating your time and expertise! We can't wait
till next year!
10 Calls in Less Than 20 Hours; 8 First Due
April
12. It only took 2 hours before the 1st call today. At
0200hrs, E1905 was alerted on a dumpster fire. E1905 & E1906
handled 2 more dumpster fires in the next hour. The next call
didn't come until 1400hrs. It was a brush fire off St Rt 124.
E1905 & B1909 arrived on scene to find approximately 6 acres off
in the woods between several houses. E2304, E1102, E1204 &
R1117 were added to the call. As those units were responding,
a possible structure fire was sent out in the 1300 blk of South Pennsylvania
Ave (also in our 1st due). E1906, E2304 & L1406 responded
to that incident. They arrived on location at that incident
and quickly downgraded the assignment to 1 engine. Not our Engine
though! E1906 was directed to another brush fire on No. 12 Hollow
Rd. E1204 & L1406 were directed to our station for area
coverage while units operated on both brush fires. E2304 handled
the investigation on S Penn. E1204 & L1406 were alerted
a few minutes later to another small outside fire in Box 191.
As units cleared SR 124, they were redirected to No. 12 Hollow Rd.
In all, 3 Engines, 3 Brush units and ODNR Forestry worked that fire.
As the No. 12 Hollow incident was ending, E1204, E1906, R1217 &
L1406 were alerted for a brush fire with possible extension to the
house on Number 8 Pike. It was quickly controlled with handlines
and several other fires were being toned out all over the area.
All mutual aid units were released, most to be sent to other fires.
At 1802hrs, B1909 & SRU1910 were alerted to a brush fire just
outside Oak Hill. They worked with Madison-Jefferson units for
2 1/2 hours before returning to Wellston. The night finally
ended with another 1st due brush fire on St Rt 124. Crews finally
returned to service, for good, at 2222hrs. It seems as though
the quick start is going to continue throughout April!
Rollover on 124
April 14. At 1427hrs, E1905 &
R1908 responded to a 1 vehicle rollover on St Rt 124. Oddly
enough, this was the same address as the large brush fire 2 days earlier.
Crews arrived on scene to find 1 vehicle, with 2 minor patients and
no entrapment (that seems to be the theme for 2006!) Crews isolated
the vehicle and assisted with patient care and clean-up. Crews
were back in service within an hour.

Structure Fire at the WHS Track
April 16. E1905 & E1906 were
alerted for a structure fire behind the Wellston High School football
field at 0439hrs this morning. Units arrived on scene to find
a storage building well-off. Each engine stretched a 1 3/4 inch
preconnect and quickly extinguished the fire. Units overhauled
the building and returned to service at 0546hrs.

Another Quick Knock on a 1st Due Structure
April 17. After
a day of service calls, 6 to be exact, E1905, E1906 & SRU1910
responded to a 1st due structure fire in the 400 block of South New
York Avenue. E1905 arrived on scene at 0441hrs to find smoke
showing from a residential garage with apartment above. Crews
made entry to find a small fire inside the garage with extension up
the wall. It appeared as though the building was struck by lightning
from a thunderstorm that was moving through the area. Crews
contained the incident quickly and were back in service by 0410hrs.

Quick Start to April Includes a Structure with Coalton
April
4. Crews responded to 5 calls today, including an off-road bus
fire and a working structure fire. The day didn't start until
1744 when E1905, E1906 & Br1909 responded to the 1000 blk of West
Broadway for a vehicle fire. E1905 arrived on scene to find
a short bus with a working engine compartment fire. Unfortunately,
the bus sat approximately 400 feet from the roadway; unfortunately,
that is, for the yard. Once the crew parked the engine, the
fire was quickly extinguished with a preconnect. The other units
were returned after arriving on scene. E1905 cleared at 1817hrs.

2 small fires and a service call were
handled between 1830hrs and 2200hrs. At 2334hrs, as firefighters
were done cleaning and prepared for bed, Coalton was alerted for a
possible structure fire on Raysville Rd. Their assignment was
quickly upgraded for a working house fire with the residents not yet
accounted for. E1905 responded with 5 and arrived on scene a
few minutes later. As Coalton finished the primary search, E1905's
crew joined FFs already on scene and advanced 2 lines to the interior.
The fire was knocked down and overhaul started. Their were no
injuries to the residents, but our thoughts are with Coalton Chief
John Frisby who was transported from the scene due to a medical problem.
