October 9-13. National Fire
Prevention Week is always a busy one for Wellston firefighters.
2006 was no different! 3 schools, 5 days, 7 grades and 800 students
always give us a good workout. The presentation started out
with "A Firefighter's Toolbox," which included discussion about fire
alarms, matches, candles and smoke detectors. FFs then covered
numerous topics including: "Always Know 2 Ways Out," "Get Low and
Go," "Get Out and Stay Out" and "Stop, Drop and Roll." The presentation
ended with one of the teachers donning all of the firefighter's gear.
This was to demonstrate that even though we may look and sound scary
to children, we are always there to help! And, of course, all
the students received some goodies, including their own Wellston "Fire
Chief" helmet!
FPW is a great experience for FFs and students
alike and it wouldn't be successful without the assistance of the
FFs and the schools. Thanks to all the school staff, students
and FFs that make Fire Prevention Week a huge success for Wellston's
kids!!!
Fire Behavior Lab in Wellston
October
14-15. The Ohio Fire Academy was nice enough to bring their
Fire Behavior Lab (Flashover Simulator) back to Wellston for another
weekend of training. 20 Jackson County firefighters, including
9 from Wellston, were able to attend the class this weekend.
This is a yearly event and is a great opportunity for FFs to get live
fire experience in a very controlled environment. Thanks to
the OFA and the FFs who attended!
