1 Overturned, 2 Ejected, 3 Traumas (and 2 Flown Out!)
December 16.  Firefighters were woke up at 0157hrs this morning for an overturned auto with ejection on St Rt 327 north of Wellston near Glen Roy Rd.  E1905 arrived on scene 5 minutes later to find 1 car on its top with 3 Priority-1 patients.  1 patient was completely ejected, 1 patient was partially ejected and the other remained in the vehicle.  Crews spit up and started patient care on all 3 patients.  An additional Medic and 2 helicopters were requested, one for each ejection, and E1906 was sent to the MedFlight base to stand by.  The patients were quickly loaded into the Medics and transported to the LZ where E1906 had both helicopters on the ground and waiting.  Those patients were transported to trauma centers while the 3rd patient was transported by ground to Holzer Medical Center - Jackson.  Crews remained in service until 0312hrs.

Wellston Residents Saved by Smoke Detector on Christmas Eve
December 24.  At 0331hrs, the 911 line rang for a reported structure fire at 370 Comet Road.  Box 191 was alerted and R/E1906 arrived on scene 3 minutes later to find heavy smoke pouring from the structure.  They stretched an attack line while E1905 laid the hydrant line in and started the search.  As R/E1906 was entering the structure, Command reported that all occupants were accounted for outside the structure.  L1406 went to the roof and completed vertical ventilation.  The primary was continued and turned out negative and the fire was knocked down within 10 minutes.  Crews remained on scene for another hour completing salvage and overhaul.  Thanks to a working smoke detector, there were no injuries.  The fire is believed to have started in the area of the Christmas tree.

Another Working Fire on Christmas Day
December 25.  At 1414hrs, almost 36 hours after the first fire was extinguished, the tones dropped for another possible structure fire at 370 Comet Road.  Capt Bill Denney arrived on scene within a minute and advised of a working fire.  By the time the engine arrived, fire was through the roof.  Due to the walls and ceiling being opened up from the earlier fire, and the vertical ventililation that had also been completed, the fire was well into the lightweight roof before our arrival.  An interior attack was attempted, but command evacuated all units a few minutes into the attack.  About 2 minutes later, the roof collapsed into the house.  All firefighters were accounted for and found to be okay and a deck gun and L1406's aerial were put into service to darken the fire down.  Crews then returned inside to mop up.  Units remained on scene until 1644hrs.

Overturned Auto with Entrapment on West Broadway
December 25.  WPD requested the Rescue Assignment for an overturned auto on West Broadway at 2111hrs this evening.  R/E1906 arrived on scene to find a car on its top with the driver's hand trapped between the bottom of the window sill and the pavement.  Lighting and stabilization was setup and when R1908 arrived on scene, the spreaders were put into service to lift the vehicle.  Once completed, the patient was removed via the back window and turned over to Medic 081.  The extrication took only 5 minutes to complete and the units were back in quarters by 2232hrs.

Another 1st Due Trailer - Glen Nell Road
December 3.  E1905, E1906, E1204, E1203 & R1908 were alerted to 1338 Glen Nell Road at 1539hrs.  E1905 & E1204 arrived on scene within seconds of each other to find a 14'x60' mobile home with fire showing from all openings.  The crews pulled 2 handlines to the interior and started an aggressive attack.  E1906 immediately started overhauling for the Engine crews.  The primary search was reported negative and the fire reported knocked down within 8 minutes.  Due to the heavy fire conditions, crews remained on scene for another hour completing salvage and overhaul.  Thanks to the quick knock down, some of the family's items were able to be salvaged.  The residents were displaced, but there were no injuries to them or the firefighters.  All units cleared the scene around 1700 hours.

House Fire on North Wisconsin
December 7.  Firefighters were sent to 110 North Wisconsin Avenue at 1841hrs this evening.  Enroute, Wellston PD advised of a 2 story residence with heavy fire showing from the 2nd floor and numerous oxygen cylinders inside.  E1905 arrived on scene 3 minutes later and stretched a crosslay to the 2nd floor for interior attack.  E1906 brought the hydrant in and stretched a 2nd line to the 1st floor to extinguish some extension there.  R1908 started the primary while E2304 & E1204 stretched a line to each floor to back up our Engines.  L1406 went to the roof and E1203 had the RIT.  The fire was knocked down within 8 minutes and the primary search was negative.  Due to balloon frame construction, crews spent a little over an hour salvaging and overhauling the house.  Another excellent job by the crews kept the extension to a minumum and all crews were in service by 2030hrs.  There were no injuries during this incident.  Coincidentally, A/C Tom Helm was on M081 and FF Rex Stroth was the PD officer on scene.

Unknown Fire = 1st Due Structure
December 9.  Again today, at exactly 1841hrs, E1907 was alerted for an unknown type fire in an old coal mine off of Mulga Rd.  Enroute, A/C Pelletier asked for the 2nd Engine and the Brush truck due to the inaccessiblity of the area.  Units arrived on scene at 1846hrs to find a large pile of trash and an abandoned mobile home well-off.  It was quickly determined that there was no risk to life or other property and the fire was allowed to "consume" most of the debris.  Crews wetted down the surrounding area to prevent a brush fire and returned to service within an hour.  On the way back to the station, the crews made friends with the tenant of a large bon fire.  He quickly realized that it probably wasn't a good idea to have a fire quite that large in the place that it was.  That fire was "scaled down" and the crews were back in station by 2015hrs.

2006 Comes to an End, 35 Fires, 5 Extrications
December 31.  As 2006 ends, we look back over a safe and productive year.  There were no fire fatalities in our district and very few serious crashes.  We had another successful year in fire prevention and the department has strenghthened with the addition of working officers.  We had 35 fires this year, down from 2005 (our highest year to date).  We only had 5 extrications in 2006, down from 12 in 2005.  We had a handful of serious crashes that ended up not having entrapment (somehow).  We also had an increase in crashes involving ejections.  Overall, we responded to 585 calls for service, a huge increase in years past.  2004 was our old high at 484.  As we look toward 2007, we know there will be a lot of changes.  We merely hope for another safe and productive year!!!
