Large Brush Fire in Bloomfield Twp
September 14.
E1905 was already on a truck fire in Bloomfield Twp when the tones
dropped for an unknown fire off Smokey Hollow Rd. 1100 units
marked on scene of a large brush fire and started calling in mutual
aid. E1905 & B1909 responded on the initial call.
SRU1910 ended up responding later for manpower. Approximately
80 acres burnt during the six hour incident. Crews eventually
made a fire line completely around the fire with dozers. Foot
teams then lit a backfire to enlarge the line and contain the fire.
There were no injuries and the cause of the incident is still under
investigation. The response included: Engines - 1102, 1103,
1905, Brush - 1118, 1909, 1404, MJ4, Tanker 1411, Rescue 1117, Dozers
- Madison Jefferson & Ohio Division of Natural Resources, SRU
1910 & Medic 091. E1203 was called to our station for area
coverage. They handled 2 runs during this incident. Scioto
Twp FD responded to Jackson's station for coverage and did not have
any additional calls. This was a tiring incident, but a good
job done by all. It was nice to work with some of the crews
we don't normally see!

View from Side Charlie
Looking in From Side Alpha
September 13. Crews were woke up by the horn at
0350hrs. It was either that, or the neighbors pounding on the
door. The box was sent to 221 West B St, 3 doors up from the
station. E1905 marked on scene and A/C Ryan Pelletier assumed
command. "2 story, wood frame, single family dwelling, with
flames showing on Side Delta with exposure problems." E1905's
crew immediately started an aggressive interior attack. E1906
tagged the hydarant and pulled a back-up line to protect the
Delta exposure. Flames were less than 2 feet from that
residence on our arrival. Due to the location, and crowding
on the street, L1901 positioned on the ramp of the station and started
a primary search. E1204 took Side Charlie and performed vertical
ventilation. E2304 laid a secondary supply and assisted with
overhaul. L1406 completed the secondary and assisted with salvage
& overhaul. The bulk of the fire was knocked down, and the
primary search was completed, in less than 8 minutes. Crews
remained on scene until 0558hrs.

Crash Into Building/Fire Claims Life of Wellston Man
September 10. A tragic accident claimed the life
of a Wellston area man and injured another. At 2348hrs, Coalton
FD was alerted on an MVC into a house with possible entrapment in
the area of 5200 St Rt 788. As Coalton acknowledged, County
updated the call with information confirming entrapment and advising
of a possible fire involving the structure and the car. The
box was quickly filled bringing Engines 1203, 1204, 1905 & 1401,
Rescues 1217 & 1908. Due to the text of the call and the
location in a non-hydranted area, Command 1221 Chief John Frisby also
requested Tankers 1411 & 2302. 1200's engines arrived on
scene with a working structure fire in a garage. They confirmed
a vehicle inside the structure with bystanders advising of entrapment
of at least 1 occupant. They also advised of a power pole on
fire with an energized line ready to fall on the fireground.
An aggressive attack was immediately started. When E1905 arrived
on scene, we pulled a line from our Engine and made a push toward
the vehicle. R1908's crew arrived and popped the driver's door,
locating a Priority 4 victim inside. Crews worked heroically
to extinguish the fire and search for any other victims. The
only other occupant of the vehicle was located down the road at a
neighboring residence. He had crawled out of the wreckage before
the fire engulfed the car. Wellston units didn't clear until
0226hrs, with Coalton units remaining on scene to assist with the
investigation. SEOEMS, Jackson County SO, the Ohio State Highway
Patrol, and the Wellston Police Department were on scene in addition
to Coalton, Wellston, Jackson & Hamden fire departments.

4-Wheeler MVC in the Woods
September 4. Tones dropped at 2020hrs for a 4-wheeler MVC
with injury in the woods off St Rt 327 on the north end of the 1st
due. E1905 & B1909 responded with a total of 10 FFs.
When crews arrived on scene, they were advised of a male occupant
with major injuries who had already been in the woods for about an
hour. One of the Medics from 081 took the hike with
A/C Ryan Pelletier approximately 2 miles into the woods. There
was no vehicle access to the scene originally, so crews walked in
with chain saws to cut a path in for an SUV that was already on scene.
Along with egress, FFs helped with packaging, loading and transportation
of the victim, and set up the LZ for MedFlight 3 on 327. Crews
cleared the scene after about 2 hours of work. The patient was
flown, priority 1 to Grant Medical Center.

Vinton County Changes to County-wide Numbering
September 1. Vinton County emergency services
made the swith over to County-wide numbering at midnight this morning.
VC took the 2000s to keep continuity with Jackson County (1000s).
This will assist all departments with response and communication,
not to mention it will help me with my narratives. The switch
over went smoothly and we've already had a few intercounty calls to
try it out on. Hamden, our main mutual aid department, is station
2300. Their trucks remained the same numbers, just adding 2300
to them. VC also adopted the unit numbering system with all
chiefs being XX21 and the numbering continuing from there.
Vinton
County numbering is as follows:
2100 - Emergency Management Agency
2200
- Dundas Fire
2300 - Hamden Fire
2400 - McArthur Fire
2500 - Wilkesville
Fire
2600 - Zaleski Fire
2800 - Harrison Twp Fire
2900 - Vinton County

Fully Involved Vacant Structure With Bloomfield
September 12. At 0234hrs, the box was hit for a vacant
structure fire in Bloomfield Twp off of Pattonsville Rd. Engines
1102, 1103, 1905, & 1401, Tanker 1411, & Rescue 1117 responded.
All 3 Bloomfield units marked on scene simultaneously with
a vacant, wood frame, single family dwelling fully involved.

the fire from the outside. Water shuttle operations were started
and Wellston units cleared the scene at 0454hrs. Another crews

Structural Fire Attack Class
September 18. Crews from all over the
area participated in a Structural Fire Attack Class hosted by the
Vinton-Jackson Firefighter's Association. Crews were at the
donated house in Bloomfield Twp from 1400hrs till around 2300hrs.
FFs participated in several interior attack evolutions. The
first half of the training consisted of 1 room fires on the 2nd floor.
The training picked up as crews moved downstairs to attack 1 and 2
room fires. After the training was complete, and every FF was
accounted for, the house was allowed to burn completely down.
Special thanks to the owner and to the Bloomfield Twp FD who allowed
the VJFFA to use the structure for training. This is the same
house that was used for RIT training in June. A safe and successful
evening was had by everyone. Congratulations to everyone who
participated and made this event a success!!!

scene to find a premanufactured home, fully involved. The structure
was confirmed to be abandoned and Command 1121 Chief Joe Alcox ordered
exterior operations. Wellston sent 2 engines and maintained
a crew on station. Our units cleared the scene just before 1500hrs.
