1st Due Structure on North New Jersey
June 8.  At 0232hrs, the tones dropped on a structure fire in the 200 Block of North New Jersey Ave.  E1905 marked on scene in less than a minute with an outbuilding fully involved approximately 6 feet from a residence.  E5's crew made quick work of the fire while E1906's crew checked for extension and helped with overhaul.  Crews cleared the scene around 0300hrs.

June 8.  Crews took advantage of the warm weather for training this month.  E1905, E1906, E1907, & R1908 with approximately 15 members traveled to Lake Alma for the class.  Crews had two stations - drafting & large stream deployment.  FFs were at the lake for about 2 hours.  Needless to say, our presence attracted a lot of attention from the beach-goers.  In addition to Wellston crews, we also had 1 firefighter from Cleveland FD who was at the lake on vacation.  June's training was a little laid back, seeing as how the RIT class is scheduled for June 25 & 26.  ContactAaron Dupree for information on that class and others hosted by the Vinton-Jackson Firefighters Assoc.

Industrial Accident with One Trapped
June 14.  Just after 1200hrs, R1908 was alerted for a Medical Assist for a laceration at Superior Hardwoods just outside the City.  When Medic 081 arrived on scene, they advised they had an industrial accident with the patient pinned to a machine.  1923 A/C Ryan Pelletier immediately upgraded the call and added E1905 and R1407 from Jackson.  R8 & E5's crews found a male with a rough cut 1" x 6" that was approximately 8 feet long thru his left thigh near the femoral artery.  FFs cut the board to a workable length, and with the help of R1407's crew, the patient was carried to the awaiting Medic unit.  He was then transported Priority 1 to HMC-Jackson where he was airlifted to a trauma center.  With the exception of a FF/EMT that rode with the Medic, crews were back in service by 1230hrs.

Storms Send Crews on 6 Calls in Less Than 3 Hours
June 14.  A series of strong storms moved thru the area this afternoon.  As the storm was just starting, E1905 responded to a natural gas leak involving a high pressure 3 inch line.  Crews then responded to 2 seperate power lines down.  Hamden FD was alerted for area coverage at that time.  The next call was trees on a line with a possible structure fire.  Units cleared other calls to respond.  E1203 from Coalton was also alerted.  Crews arrived on scene with nothing showing and the call was held with 1 Engine.  Crews then responded on a 2 vehicle MVC.  The Rescue arrived on scene with no injuries and returned all units.  The evening ended with another gas leak.  5 trucks from Wellston were on calls simultaneously, along with an Engine from Coalton and an Engine from Hamden.  Thanks to all crews.  Also, thanks to the cadets, and my wife Mel,  who helped out with dispatching duties.  Great job by all!!!
Structure Fire With 1200
June 20.  At 0046hrs, E1905 & E1906 were alerted 2nd due to a working structure fire on Sands Hill Road.  E1905 arrived 1st to find a 14x60 premanufactured home fully involved.  Crews worked for 45 minutes before clearing the scene.  Both Engines responded to an alarm drop at 0130hrs before returning to service around 0215hrs.

Water Rescue Team Due on Drowning at Lake Jackson
June 26.  The Madison-Jefferson FD was sent to Lake Jackson this evening for a male subject last seen in the water.  They arrived on scene to confirm that they had a male subject, unaccounted for, and last seen treading water approximately 30 feet from shore.  They immediately requested additional resources, including the Water Rescue team from our station.  When Wellston crews arrived on scene, we put 3 divers and our boat in the water along with the other boats and rescuers.  Due to the vegetation and relative shallow depths the divers found, it was decided to walk circular roped search patterns with rescuers and allow the divers to check the deeper areas.  While rescuers were setting up to start the rope searches, a FF from MJ located the victim in approximately 7 feet of water.  He was quickly ushered to our inflatable where lifesaving efforts were started.  He was then transported to a pontoon boat which took him to shore where patient care was transferred to SEOEMS.  He was then transported to Holzer Medical Center in Jackson.  Even with the outstanding efforts of all the agencies involved, the subject succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced at the ER.
Rapid Intervention Team Training
June 25-26.  Several firefighters from throughout the county attended an intensive RIT class this weekend.  FFs endured the heat and humidty to learn how to better assist and lost or trapped firefighter.  Saturday morning consisted of classroom followed by movement of disabled firefighters.  The day ended with window bail-outs from upper floors and the Columbus drill (lifting FFs thru the floor).  The 2nd day started with movement of disabled FFs up and down stairs, the Denver drill (removing FFs thru windows in confined spaces), RIT team tool selection and preperation, and ended with 3 hands-on, high intensity scenarios.  Thanks to everyone who participated and special thanks to our instructors!
