HAZMAT Team Activated in Jackson
FF Ben Matthews Leaving the CP
April 5.  Just after 1300hrs today, 1400 got toned out for an unknown chemical leaking from a tractor trailer just off St Rt 35 in Jackson.  When JFD arrived on scene, they called for the Jackson County HAZMAT Team to respond.  HAZMAT Chief David Channel assumed command on a 40' intermodal container with an unknown liquid dripping out.  All units were advised to respond in off of St Rt 93 to stay upwind from the incident.  E1905 & R1908 responded with a total of 6 FFs (all Technicians).  After scene containment and a briefing A/C Ryan Pelletier & FF Bill Denney (both Techs on the HAZMAT Team) donned protective suits and made entry into the hot zone.  After investigation & identification of the chemical, all personnel were decontaminated and the cleanup was turned over to a contractor.  Wellston units remained on scene until 1618hrs when they were alerted to respond on a brush fire in 1200's 1st due.  All units worked great together!  Thanks to EVERYONE for the safe & successful outcome!

Small House Fire in Coalton
April 7.  At 1033hrs this morning the tones dropped for a residential structure fire on Darling St in Coalton.  E1203, E1204, E1905, & E1906 responded.  E1203 marked on scene of a 1 story residential with smoke from the attic.  Coalton crews put a quick knock on the fire while E1905's crew completed a primary and started opening up.  E1906 checked for extension and started overhaul.  Wellston units cleared the scene around 1130hrs.

April 8.  Around 2100hrs, tones started dropping all over the County for a 2 car head-on located on St Rt 124 just past Co Rd 39 (Mulga Rd).  E1905 & R1908, with a crew of 9, responded with M-081 & M-091.  R8 arrived on scene just after M-081 and confirmed 2 cars, head-on, but amazingly no entrapment.  There were a total of 4 patients, all priority 3.  The driver of the white vehicle signed a refusal while FFs and Medics packaged and transported all 3 occupants in the black vehicle.  Crews cleared the scene by being sent to another MVC in the City.  R1908 arrived to find a car that had hit the car port at the Edgewood Manor Nursing Facility.  There was major damage, but no structural instability, and FFs cleared within a half hour.  Crews ran an unrelated fire alarm activation to Edgewood around midnight before calling it a day.

Fire Behavior Lab in Wellston
April 10.  Crews from around the County participated in the Ohio Fire Academy's Fire Behavior Lab (Flashover Simulator) at the Wellston High School today.  The class was partially funded by the Vinton-Jackson Firefighter's Association & 30 FFs were able to take part in the training.  A/C Ryan Pelletier, Capt Dennis Dupree, FF Aaron Dupree, FF Brian Dunn, FF Roman Brandau, FF Jeff Jackson, FF Ashley Phillips, FF Ben Matthews, FF Jeremy Janey, FF Barry Lambert, & FF Richie Kisor experienced multiple evolutions in the mobile lab.  On a personal note, this training was less than 12 hours after my wedding (about 6 hrs after the reception!) and my loving wife still allowed me to participate!!!  She even took pictures for us!  I love you Mel!  Thanks to all the crews who participated and the VJFFA!
E1905 Involved in Minor Accident Enroute to Fire
April 14.  Just after 1300hrs today, E1905 & B1909 were enroute to a piece of logging equipment on fire off of Goose Run Rd.  While both apparatus were responding to the call, E1905 rounded a curve on Pattonsville Rd.  A/C Tom Helm was faced with an instantaneous life or death decision.  As he came thru the curve, he saw a car in his lane of travel.  Without hesitation, A/C Helm went to the shoulder of the road to avoid the car and it's occupants.  As E5 was coming to a stop, the road gave way under the weight and the truck tilted over on it's passenger side.  With all equipment strapped securely in place, and with both occupants secured by their seatbelts, all personnel were just fine.  B1909 witnessed the event and was able to stop on the shoulder, narrowly avoiding getting struck head on by the other vehicle.  A rescue from Bloomfield was also forced over by the vehicle.  Luckily, all crews were safe and after B9 stopped to check E5's occupants, they proceeded to the scene to extinguish the fire.  A wrecker was called to bring E5 back to the house.  There is some minor damage to the Engine and it has been placed out of service as a precautionary measure.  It should be back on line within a few days.
Members Attend FDIC in Indianapolis
April 16.  Five FFs took the annual voyage to Indianapolis for the Fire Department Instructor's Conference, an annual fire training conference and exposition at the RCA Dome.  Members were able to obtain valuable training information and purchase some much needed tools and supplies.  A/C Ryan Pelletier, FF Aaron Dupree, FF Roman Brandau & FF Ashley Phillips attended from Wellston.  FF Mike Woodruff from Hamden FD also attended.  Not only was this a valuable training experience, it was also my honeymoon!  Don't I have a great wife?  Love you Mel!
Head-on with Entrapment Outside Hamden
April 26.  R1908 was alerted to St Rt 160 just outside Hamden around 1340hrs today.  R8 responded with a crew of 5 to assist Hamden FD on a 2 car head-on MVC with a total of 5 patients, 1 being trapped.  Crew members stabilized the vehicle and then proceeded to flap the roof and remove the passenger side door.  The Priority 1 patient that was trapped was flown from the scene by MedFlight 3.  The driver of the car was transported Priority 1 to HMC-Jackson.  2 other occupants of the car and the driver of the SUV were transported Priority 2 to HMC-J.  The extrication took approximately 7 minutes to complete.  FFs assisted with patient packaging and transport.  R8 cleared the scene just after 1530hrs.

1st Due Commercial Building Fire, 3 Times!!!
April 26, 27.  Just before 1100hrs, the street assignment was sent for smoke in the area off Driving Park Rd.  When E1906 arrived in the area, they advised of a very heavy smoke condition.  When they came upon the former B&D Readymix building, 1922 A/C Tom Helm advised of a working fire with smoke showing.  The box was filled and crews went to work inside to get a knock on the fire.  The fire was contained quickly and crews were released around 0100hrs.  Just after 0200hrs, the tones dropped for another fire at B&D.  When crews arrived this time, they found the same structure with flames through the roof.  Due to the previous damage, and now the obvious possibility of arson, exterior operations were immediately ordered and E6 went into service with its deck gun.  Weary crews completed overhaul and went home for the second time.  Then, just before shift change at 0800hrs, crews were tapped out for a third working fire at B&D in less than 10 hours.  Crews were on scene for about an hour before heading home.  The State Fire Marshall's Office was notified on all 3 fires.  They will be investigating over the next few days.

Power Lines & Trees Down... On Houses!
April 27.  A caller reported there were "electric wires down all over the place" near Subway this evening.  E1906 & E1907 responded with a crew of 7.  When they arrived on scene, which ended up being off of 8th St, they found a tree on a house with 2 primary (bare, 7,600 volt) wires on the ground with a small fire in the grass.  Crews shut down the street, evacuated a few residences, and kept bystanders back until the arrival of AEP.  Once the power was off, crews made sure the fire was out before returning to station.  Amazingly, the house ended up with very little damage and the residents were back in before night fall.  E1906 broke away from this scene to handle a "transformer explosion" on 9th St just a couple of blocks away.  An unhappy feathered friend found out just what 7,600 volts can do.  E6 cleared the scene within 10 minutes and returned to 8th St.  All units were back in service in about an hour.

Small House Fire in the 1st Due
April 28.  At 0655 hrs, the tones dropped for a structure fire in Box Area 193.  The assignment was sent to a residence in the 500 block of Salem Rd.  A/C Ryan Pelletier assumed command on a 1 story wood frame single family dwelling with smoke showing.  Crews found a fire in the walls around the chimney.  FFs pulled some walls to expose the fire and made a quick knock.  The assignment was scaled back as crews worked to overhaul the walls and remove debris.  Coalton crews checked the interior with a thermal imager before everyone packed up around 0820 hrs.  The box consisted of E1906, E1907, E-1102, E-H4, R1117, & R1217.  Additional crews ran an AFA at Edgewood Manor as this incident was winding down.

April 28.  10 calls in the last 36 hours has made for a busy ending to a somewhat slow month.  We had not had a working fire for 3 weeks, or in tool job in a month and a half, but we've had 4 fires and an extrication in the last day and a half!!!  The busy year continues, bringing us up to 20 jobs and 5 cuts so far this year.  Rest assured, even with 180 calls in the first 4 months of the year, crews will still be ready to respond to the next alarm.  Hats off to our probies, they are definitely getting broken in the hard way.  They, as well as our new FF II grads, have all been doing an excellent job.  Our mutual aid is getting a work out too!  Thanks to everyone!
